Nikon unveils its D7100 digital SLR
Nikon is launching the D7100, a 24.1-megapixel DX-format digital SLR targeted at photography enthusiasts and aspiring photographers
The new D7100 will be launched on 21 March but won't replace the D7000, which will continue to be sold alongside the new model.
The D7100 is being targeted at photography enthusiasts and aspiring photographers, says Nikon UK, and features a 24.1-megapixel DX-format CMOS sensor. Nikon has removed the traditional optical low pass filter from the sensor to allow for clearer and sharper images.
The D7100 sports the Expeed 3 image processor, offers a sensitivity range of ISO 100 to ISO 6400, expandable to ISO 25,600, and can shoot images at a frame rate of up to 6fps at full resolution.
The new DSLR also has a 51-point autofocus system with 15 cross-type sensors in the central area. "Rapid focusing is achieved on even a largely blurred image, due to faster initial AF detection. AF operation is possible under a combined aperture value of f/8, allowing more combinations of lenses and teleconverters to be used - new to cameras of this class," says Nikon.
The D7100 also has a 2016-pixel metering sensor to identify your subject's environment with precision prior to shooting, optimising auto exposure, autofocus and auto white balance for more accurate control.
Nikon has also introduced a 1.3x crop function. "It offers a range of unique options that expand the possibilities of DX format," says Nikon. "Firstly, it opens up greater potential for your existing and new lenses by offering an additional 1.3x telephoto effect. In this mode, 51 focus points cover an even wider area of the frame, right up to the edges, for exceptional subject acquisition. It also allows for faster operation of up to 7 fps continuous shooting and Full HD movie recording up to 50i/60i."
The Nikon D7100 will be released on 21 March at a retail price of £1100 body-only and £1300 with a 18-105mm lens.
